The capital of Rajasthan, in North India, is named for its founder, Maharaja Jai Singh II (1693-1743). Hills surround the city, which is peppered with forts. The streets are lined with pink latticed windows, which look almost mystical at dusk. Jaipur, an incredibly well-planned city, was designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, an engineer and scholar, in accordance with the Shilpa Shasta, an ancient Hindu treatise on building (Vastu).
